Record price for natural pearl necklace at Christie’s auction

SB_low-Lot-160-(B)-copyA four-strand natural pearl necklace set a world-record price of just over $5 million US at Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels auction.

Featuring pearls measuring from 12.65 to 4.90 mm, the necklace went to a private buyer from Asia.

“Natural pearls achieved very strong prices and a world record $5 million was realized for a four-strand natural coloured pearl necklace” said Rahul Kadakia, international head of Christie’s Jewelry. “There was spirited bidding for coloured pink and blue diamonds, along with all the JAR creations offered in the auction. We look forward to our Magnificent Jewels auction on May 13 at Christie’s Geneva, which features the historic Maria-Christina Royal Devant-de-Corsage brooch.”

In total, 77 per cent sold by lot and value and the auction realized $41,951,125 US.
