Renard resumes operations after forest fire

Stornoway Diamond[2] has returned Québec’s Renard Mine[3] to work following the containment of a nearby forest fire. The fire reportedly covered an area of 18 x 6 km (11 x 4 mi), burning 12.6 km (7.8 mi) south of the mine and just 0.1 km (0.06 mi) from its access road.
Although the fire was far enough from the mine itself that it did not pose an imminent threat to the facilities, its proximity to the road meant it endangered those attempting to access the site. In response, Stornoway suspended its deliveries and evacuated all non-essential staff on July 2.
The process of resuming operations began on July 4, thanks to the mitigating effect of rainfall and favourable wind patterns. Stornoway also expressed gratitude to the Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources Naturelles and the Sociétè de Protection des Forêts Contre le Feu.
