The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has appointed Ashish Deo as its chief executive officer (CEO).

Deo—who most recently served as commercial director of the Fairtrade Foundation—replaces the council’s chief operations officer (COO) Catherine Sproule. She had been serving as interim CEO since former CEO Michael Rae stepped down at the end of 2013 to pursue interests closer to home in Australia.

“The board of the RJC and I welcome the appointment of Ashish Deo, who will bring a depth of experience in strategic and geographical skills,” said RJC chair James Courage. “He will strongly complement the current management team to support membership growth and support services in all markets.”

Deo has worked with major consumer brands across Asian, North American, and European markets and will help RJC as it focuses on Asia and extends its reach in the other regions.

He takes over from Sproule Sept. 8 and will be based in the London office.
