The Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) has joined the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) as an association member.

Following a presentation by RJC chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Rae and Catherine Sproule, its chief operations officer (COO), the CJA board approved its membership, which is effective Jan. 1.

“We are very pleased to add the CJA’s support with the many international jewellery associations who are current members of the Responsible Jewellery Council,” said CJA president and CEO J. David Ritter. “As the voice of the Canadian jewellery industry, it is our continued commitment to expand our presence outside of Canada to better serve our members.”

RJC is an international not-for-profit organization of more than 340 member companies across the jewellery supply chain from mine to retail. Its members must submit to third-party auditing to verify conformance to its Code of Practices (COP). RJC certifies companies producing goods using gold, diamonds, and platinum group metals.

“The RJC is pleased the board of directors of the Canadian Jewellers Association has voted to join the [council],” Rae said. “This membership will take effect in January when the CJA will become part of the RJC’s trade association network dedicated to delivering the message of responsible business practices to its membership.”

CJA joins jewellery trade associations in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Denmark, Holland, and Belgium.
