Shuffle at AJA causes stir

Gagik Gevorkyan is back at the helm of the Armenian Jewellers Association (AJA) following the resignation of its acting president.

Earlier this month, Gevorkyan addressed the membership in an association newsletter on the departure of Berge Abajian, who took over his responsibilities while preparations were in the works for an election.

Gevorkyan announced in April he was pulling back from his duties at AJA, citing an overloaded work schedule.

“It goes without saying that I did not intend to fully retire, and I expressed my readiness to assist in all matters related to AJA,” Gevorkyan wrote in the newsletter.

“I temporarily delegated my presidential duties and responsibilities to Mr. Berge Abajian, who at the time as first vice-president of AJA International, was automatically the first in line after my position. When he took office, Mr. Abajian sent e-mails out mistakenly announcing his appointment as AJA president, whereby distorting the true state of affairs”¦ For the first time in many years, statements compromising AJA’s authority began being published in the press.”

According to the newsletter, Abajian resigned within a month of taking up the post due to issues related to his business.

The situation appears to have triggered criticism within the association, with Gevorkyan calling on members to refrain from sending e-mails and spreading rumours.

“Hasty actions such as these can negatively affect AJA’s fundamental groundwork of its system, causing irreparable damage to our association,” Gevorkyan said.
