A ring set with a Burmese ruby of impressive size is among the highlights to be sold at Sotheby’s[2] Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite[3] auction in Hong Kong this spring.

The piece includes a surround of D-colour, internally flawless pear-shaped diamonds, with pink-tinted brilliant-cut diamonds pavé-set on the shank, but the centre stone is the true showstopper. The ruby—sourced from the famous Mogok region—weighs 24.70 carats.

“Unheated Mogok rubies in excess of 20 carats are among the rarest gems in the world,” said Christopher P. Smith, president of American Gemological Laboratories[4] (AGL). “Very few of these treasures from the world’s most important and legendary ruby source are known to exist.”

Scheduled for April 3 in Hall 5 of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre[5], the sale will also feature high-quality pieces incorporating jadeite, blue and yellow diamond, Kashmir sapphire, and emerald. The ruby ring is expected to sell for approximately US$10.4 million.
