Canadian Catherine Sproule has been named interim chief executive officer (CEO) of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

Sproule takes over from Michael Rae, who is leaving the organization to pursue interests closer to home in Australia. The search for his successor is on.

In a press release, RJC chair James Courage thanked Rae for his contribution to the establishment and development of the RJC over the past seven years and wished him well in his future career.

RJC is an international not-for-profit organization of more than 450 member companies across the jewellery supply chain from mine to retail. Its members must submit to third-party auditing to verify conformance to its COP. RJC certifies companies producing goods using gold, diamonds, and platinum group metals.

Sproule is a familiar face in the jewellery industry, both at home and abroad. She served previously as executive director of the Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) and was the Canadian public relations director for the Diamond Trading Company’s (DTC’s) Diamond Information Centre.

In 2006, Sproule joined the RJC, serving as director of North American operations before being named chief operations officer (COO) a year later. She oversees the management of RJC’s global finances and administration, including membership and communications.
