German designer Thomas Sabo is teaming up with Skate Canada as its official jewellery partner.

“With our commitment to figure skating, we have succeeded in expanding our sponsorship activities to include a new and exciting partnership,” said company founder, Thomas Sabo.

“Figure skating is an esthetic sport with a truly glamorous image. I am absolutely certain that together, we will be wowing crowds both on and off the ice in the future.”

Canadian figure skaters and Grand Prix bronze medallists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier helped celebrate the partnership at a media event held at Toronto’s Trump International Hotel and Tower. The addition of several skate-themed charms commemorates the new affiliation.

The gathering also saw the launch of Thomas Sabo’s ‘Sweet Diamonds’ collection, which is a new design direction for the company, says its international public relations manager, Martin Hurtig.

“Thomas Sabo has always been known for sterling silver, but we did use gold in the 1980s,” he tells Jewellery Business. “It’s important for us to add something to the range of our jewellery and to use a touch of gold in our pieces. It’s two-tone, which we thought was interesting and works well for our international markets.”

Although the addition of gold and diamonds raises price points slightly, Hurtig says the collection is being branded as affordable luxury and not outside of the price range of its other lines.

It was also a move to add more classic pieces that would be regarded as timeless. The new design concept also extends to the Thomas Sabo watch collection, which features stainless steel mesh straps and cleaner dial esthetics.
