Tokyo gets GIA lab

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has opened its ninth lab, this time in Tokyo.

In addition to offering Diamond Dossier and Diamond Grading Report services for D to Z diamonds up to 2.99 carats, the lab will also take in coloured stones and pearls for any other GIA services.

Although the lab says it is planning to expand its services, in the meantime it will send coloured stones and pearls to another GIA global lab for grading before returning them to Tokyo.

“Bringing GIA’s diamond grading standards and research-backed lab services to such an important market will serve the public interest by supporting the Japanese gem and jewellery industry,” said Tom Moses, GIA senior vice-president for laboratory and research.
