SCS Global Services has certified that Umicore Precious Metals Canada’s Butterfly products comprise 100 per cent recycled gold content.
SCS Global Services (SCS) has certified Umicore Precious Metals Canada as using recycled content in its Butterfly gold products.

“Together with our ISO 9001-2008, ISO 14001-2004, and Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) certifications, Butterfly recycled precious metals are part of Umicore’s offering of sustainable products and services,” said Thomas Jansseune, managing director of the Markham, Ont.-based company.

SCS provides third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing, testing, and standards development.

“This certification helps companies demonstrate they are actively taking care of the environment,” said Stowe Hartridge-Beam, SCS’s director of business development. “In addition, with the recent SEC ruling on conflict minerals and the Dodd-Frank Act, SCS-certified 100 per cent recycled gold now qualifies as ‘DRC Conflict Free.'”

The U.S. act requires publicly traded companies to determine and disclose if they use minerals like gold originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or one of nine neighbouring countries that finance or benefit armed groups there.

Based in Belgium, Umicore is a global materials technology group focusing on catalysis, energy materials, performance materials, and recycling. Umicore Precious Metals Canada and Umicore Precious Metals USA represent its jewellery and industrial metals business unit in North America.
