A selection of art deco pieces are expected to attract international attention at Bonhams London Jewels sale next month.
Leading the auction is a Cartier aquamarine and diamond necklace, circa 1940. The piece, which features approximately 169.85 carats of vari-cut aquamarine and 9.64 carats of diamonds, carries a pre-sale estimate of £100,000 to 150,000 (C$170,000 to $260,000)
Also going under the hammer is a pair of art deco aquamarine and diamond pendent earrings by Cartier, circa 1935. Each earring is set with a large briolette-cut aquamarine drop (approximately 47 carats each) and is suspended from a square-cut diamond surmount (8.45 ctw). The set is estimated between £40,000 and 60,000 (C$69,000 and $100,000).
“These splendid jewels not only typify the geometric art deco style, but are also from the 1930s—the decade Cartier began to create stunning aquamarine jewels that were particularly popular with its British and American clients,” says Emily Barber, Bonhams UK jewellery director.
Also among the auction items of interest are two pieces by Lacloche Frères. The first piece is an art deco diamond, enamel, and gem-set picture bracelet, circa 1925, which carries a pre-sale estimate of £120,000 to £150,000 (C$205,800 to $257,200). The item features articulated panels with pavé-set diamonds, overlaid with highly stylized cherry blossom motifs with black enamel branches, cabochon ruby blooms, and cabochon emerald leaves.
The second Lacloche Frères piece is an art deco diamond, onyx, and enamel brooch, circa 1920. Designed as a broche poigneé (or ‘drawer handle’), the item features pavé-set old brilliant and single-cut diamonds and cabochon onyx studs. It’s expected to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000 (C$52,000 and $86,000).
“Lacloche Frères pieces are always in demand; the jewels it made during the art deco period are quite simply exquisite,” Barber says.
The auction will take place Dec. 4. For more, click here[2].
