De Beers Group has revealed the winners of the 2024 Shining Light Awards, a jewellery design competition that celebrates emerging talent from the countries where the company recovers diamonds. The competition, founded in 1995, is part of the De Beers Group Designers Initiative, which aims to empower young jewellery designers from Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa.
The awards are held every two years, inviting designers aged 18 to 35 who are either in their final year of a jewellery design programme, graduates or have relevant design experience. This year’s competition theme, “Luxury Redefined,” challenged entrants to present innovative and inclusive interpretations of luxury while celebrating diversity. Designers were tasked with creating a complete jewellery collection containing a ring, necklace, earrings, bangles, and bracelets. 104 entries were received, and 22 finalists were selected from the four participating countries.
This years’ rewards include business support, a structured skills development programme, and tuition assistance, all aimed at empowering winners to build sustainable careers in the jewellery industry and contribute to their communities.
