
Police have charged two youths in connection with a robbery that took place at Griffin Jewellery, located in the Pen Centre at 221 Glendale Avenue in St. Catharines, Ont. The incident occurred when five suspects entered Griffin Jewellery and used a small sledgehammer to smash display cases and stash jewellery into bags.
A few witnesses attempted to intervene, which prompted the suspects to flee the area, with some witnesses chasing after them. During the pursuit, one witness collided with a mall column and two others were sprayed with an irritant resembling pepper spray. The witness who collided with the column was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while the witnesses sprayed with the irritant received treatment on-site.
A 15-year-old male from Scarborough was arrested and charged with several criminal offenses, including robbery, disguised with intent, possession of break-in instruments, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, administering a noxious thing, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failing to comply with a youth sentence order. A 17-year-old male from Springhill, N.S., was also arrested and charged with robbery, disguised with intent, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, and administering a noxious thing.
Both individuals have been remanded into custody. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are searching for the four remaining suspects involved in the robbery.
